The objective of the proposal is to measure the opacity of isochorically heated iron in conditions relevant to the radiative zone of the sun. Previous experiments carried out at the SANDIA facility have shown large discrepancies
between experimental data and modeling of L-shell (between 900 eV to 1500 eV) iron opacities. It is essential to confirm or contest SANDIA measurements to benchmark our atomic codes. Here we propose a different approach
to reach the relevant conditions ( T > 200 eV close to solid density). We will use the SFA to irradiate a buried layered target. Resistive heating will bring the target to electron temperatures ranging from 200 to 1000 eV. We will study the emission and opacity of heated iron as a function of electron temperature.
